Types of Cloth Diapers
Flat: Flat diapers are just that, a flat piece of material that requires folding and pins or a Snappi (see below) to fasten. These diapers are very inexpensive and easy to wash/dry, but they require a diaper cover and they can be difficult to fold and pin.
Prefolds: Prefold diapers are similar to Flat diapers but they are divided into thirds with a more absorbent layer in the middle. These are easier to use than Flat diapers and they dry more quickly than Fitteds and All-in-Ones (AIOs). Like Flat diapers, Prefolds require folding and fastening and a diaper cover.
Fitteds: Fitted diapers are shaped similarly to disposables. They usually fasten with attached snaps or Velcro. They are easy to use but they are more expensive than prefolds and they take longer to dry. They also require a diaper cover.
Covers: Diaper Covers are used over Flat, Prefolds, and/or Fitted diapers. They are usually made of PolyUrethane Laminate coated fabric (PUL), wool, or fleece. PUL covers are the trimmest and most affordable. Wool and fleece are both breathable and are great at stopping leaks. Diaper Covers usually fasten over the diaper with attached snaps or Velcro.
All-in-One Diapers: All-in-ones (AIOs) are similar to Fitteds but have a waterproof layer built in. They are usually less absorbent, more expensive, and take a long time to dry but they are extremely convenient and offer a very trim fit.
Pocket Diapers: Pocket diapers are similar to AIOs but they require an insert to use. They consist of a waterproof outer layer and a fleece inner layer that form a pocket which is stuffed with an insert or Prefold. The fleece inner layer helps keep baby dry and the removable insert allows for faster drying times. These diapers are easy to use and offer a trim fit but they are more expensive than fitteds, prefolds, and flat diapers.
Doublers: Doublers are thick absorbent pads that can be inserted between the diaper and your child to increase the absorbency of the diapers. They can be used with any type of diaper and are great to use overnight or for heavy wetters. They are sometimes topped with fleece to wick moisture away from baby’s bottom.
Liners: Liners are usually a thin piece of fabric or paper used to keep solid waste from staining diapers. Flushable paper liners are available to make clean up easier. Fleece liners are also popular because they resist stains, are soft, and wick moisture away from baby.
Snappi: Snappi® fasteners are an easy to use replacement fastener used to secure Flat and Prefold diapers without using traditional diaper pins. |
